Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area (LSSNCA) is inspired by the incredible outpouring of community support in welcoming Afghan Allies. One particular partnership, JustServe, along with the Church of Latter-day Saints of Ox Road, Virginia, was instrumental in kicking off our donation storage and distribution and LSSNCA is honored to recognize JustServe as our October Hero of the Month.
Building unity through community is a mission of both LSSNCA and JustServe. JustServe links community volunteer needs with volunteers across America. Our D.C., Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) partnership with the organization supported our rapid influx of Afghan Allies resettlement work beginning in mid-August. Through JustServe, volunteers have accepted, sorted, distributed, and inventoried greatest need items for Afghan families in Dale City and Fairfax, Virginia.
“LSSNCA has never in its history received in-kind donations at this scale and magnitude,” said LSSNCA CEO Kristyn Peck. “We consider these in-kind donations as a strong symbol of our community’s welcome of Afghan Allies. Without JustServe sending a team of professional volunteers to our offices 7 hours a day, six days a week, and the Church of Latter-day Saints providing 100,000 square feet of donated storage space, we would not have been able to accept the level of donations we’ve received, which allow Afghan Allies who are arriving with nothing but the clothes on their back the items they need to set up their new homes. Thanks to partnerships like this, we are able to serve a record-number of Afghan Allies who are safely resettling in our communities,” she said.
Due to the abundance of support, LSSNCA has closed the Ox Road location, and donations will now be stored and distributed at LSSNCA’s Hyattsville, Fairfax, and Dale City locations. JustServe also initiated the logistics for this transfer to the Amazon-donated trailers.
