Meet Karli. This cheery, bright green muppet is one of Sesame Street’s newest characters in a noticeably inclusive cast. She lives with her “for now” parents, Dalia and Clem. Karli was first introduced online in a video clip that acknowledges the challenges of foster care for both the children and caregivers. Karli’s introduction was part of Sesame Street in Communities’ initiative to bring more resources to providers and caregivers focused on enriching development from birth through age six, a critical window for brain development.

In their commitment to children’s developmental, physical, and emotional needs, Sesame Street in Communities has a vast variety of resources and multimedia tools for caregivers in both English and Spanish related to foster care and other difficult issues such as childhood trauma and homelessness. In addition to being able to watch episodes where issues of foster care are played out in understandable and relatable language, there are activities and exercises for families to do together on the website to help ease the transitions of foster care.

Since the 1950’s, LSS/NCA has trained and mentored foster parents in the nation’s capital, opening homes and hearts for thousands of children over the past 70 years. If you are interested in learning more details about foster parenting, visit our website and let us know if you have any questions.
