“It Felt Like I Was Living in Ukraine Again”: A Day of Togetherness

On June 29, 2024, Ukrainian families, brought together by language, faith, and culture, gathered to connect and share experiences in Colombia, Maryland. This special occasion, organized by Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area’s (LSSNCA) Ukrainian Supplemental Assistance Program (USAP) and the Ukrainian Refugee Student Program (URSP), coincided with Ukrainian Constitution Day, a momentous event for all Ukrainians.

The atmosphere was filled with laughter, shared stories of triumphs and challenges, and a deep sense of belonging. The venue, a peaceful poolside setting, became a sanctuary where attendees could unwind and connect with fellow Ukrainians without the usual pressures of daily life. For many, it was a rare chance to simply breathe and relax, free from the stresses of assimilation and survival.

“I felt like I was back home,” shared one participant, reflecting on the event’s impact. “LSSNCA provided such a wonderful gathering where I could truly be myself and reconnect with my roots.”

Another attendee expressed gratitude for the opportunity to attend, noting how the event restored a sense of identity and community. “In the midst of our daily struggles, often in survival mode as we navigate through our new life, we often forget the importance of allowing ourselves to relax and enjoy life,” she remarked. “This gathering reminded me of that.”

Throughout the day, barriers melted away. Smiles replaced hesitant expressions, and a visible sense of isolation dissipated as friendships blossomed. The event was a testament to the power of community and cultural celebration, bringing together individuals who, despite their diverse backgrounds, shared a common heritage and history.

As the day drew to a close, there was a sense of rejuvenation among the attendees. “It felt like I was living in Ukraine again,” one participant reflected with nostalgia. “Thank you, LSSNCA, for giving us this opportunity to feel at home once more.”

The Ukrainian gathering in Columbia was more than just an event; it was a reaffirmation of identity, a celebration of unity, and a reminder of the strength found in community. For those who attended, it was a day to cherish—a day that brought them closer to their roots and to each other.

Since 2022, nearly one third of Ukrainians have been forced to flee their homes according to UNHCR, and 532,000 have been welcomed in the U.S. LSSNCA, with your support, has provided services to 215 Ukrainian women, children, and seniors arriving in Maryland and Virginia.
